Residence

Congratulations on choosing residence!

The building you’ll stay in will feel like home for your 8 months there, even if you ended up in a building that wasn’t your first choice. Each residence has its own character, but every year this is determined by the people who live there so don’t hesitate to get to know your neighbours. If you want to get involved with Residence council ask your Don who the floor/building president is and they can enlighten you about which council positions are open.

On Dons:

The Dons are selected in a long, intense process which leaves only the best of the best standing. Your don will be there for any questions you might have including room mate issues. Dons are there to help you so feel free to knock on their doors even if you just wanted to talk.

Residence Services and General Information:

  1. Laundry
Laundry facilities are operated using a laundry card, which can be recharged using cash only at Marg Ad Front Desk. Annesley, RJ, Marg Ad, Upper Burwash and Lower Burwash each have laundry facilities in the basement or on the first floor. Middle and Bowles-Gandier have facilities for Upper and Lower Burwash respectively.
  2. Key Cards
All residence rooms at Vic are opened using magnetic keycards, similar to those found at a hotel. The only exception is RJ, which requires the cards to open the suite door and a standard metal key to open the individual room. Cards are used for security reasons, since they can be easily replaced if lost. Students are issued a key when they arrive. Replacement keys can be purchased for 25$ from Marg Ad Front Desk. Marking the key, such as putting your name or room number on it, is discouraged for security reasons.
  3. Residence Guarantee
U of T guarantees residence for every first-year student. Vic goes further to guarantee a spot in residence at Vic for every Vic student in the Faculty of Arts and Science.
  4. Information on Utilities, Residence Linens, Fridge Rentals, Parking, and Mail can be found at: www.vicu.utoronto.ca/students/residence/Other_Services.htm

On Packing:

Each residence room comes with a bed, a desk, a chair, a garbage can, a book shelf, a closet, and some come with cork board on the walls.

What to bring:
- clothes (kind of a given, I hope)

- hygiene related items (you want to me friends in your residence, right?)

- towels

- sheets, pillows, and other bedding

- shoes (think weather related with this item, when you arrive in September it will be hot and humid, the winters in Toronto are fairly tame but can be really wet and slushy)

- hair care (brush/comb, gel, hair spray, motor oil)

- school supplies (pencils, pens, paper, notebooks, hole punch, stapler, printer, ruler, this really depends on the program you are in and don’t worry if you lack the hole punch and stapler as these are available at any library for free. Printing at libraries costs $0.15)

- a backpack or book bag of some sort

- ethernet cable (there is wireless internet in all residence common areas, except for the living rooms of RJ suites, but it often is not strong enough to reach the rooms so you will need the ethernet cable to connect to the ethernet port in your room)

- laundry detergent, laundry basket, bounce sheets (or some variation of this because static sucks)

- cash in bills to load onto your laundry card

- general cleaning supplies (bathrooms in most residence are cleaned by staff but your room is NOT. Brooms and vacuums are available in each residence however a duster and general disinfectant will come in handy)

For Margaret Addison Hall:

- a shower caddy (I highly recommend you get one of these if you are living in Marg Ad because you will likely be carrying your shampoo, etc back and forth from the washroom every day)

Things you might like to bring:

- books

- a more comfortable chair

- DVDs or a gaming system (every common room has a tv and dvd player)

- pictures of family (home sickness can strike unexpectedly)

- dishes for the kitchens (your meal plan will very likely be enough to feed you for the entire meal but if you don’t like what they are serving or missed a meal time dishes come in handy)

- sports equipment (Vic has great intramural teams and Marg Ad field and the quad are great places for games of Frisbee, soccer, or a plethora of other sports)

Things you should NOT bring to Residence:

- candles

- illegal drugs

- pets

- weapons

- vuvuzelas
